Making custard powder at home is quite simple.
Homemade Custard Powder Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 1 cup powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (or the seeds of 1 vanilla bean)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- A few drops of yellow food coloring (optional, for color)
Instructions:
1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the cornstarch, powdered sugar, and salt. Whisk until well combined.
2. Add Flavour: If you're using vanilla extract, you can either add it directly to the dry mixture or combine it with the food coloring and then add it. If using vanilla bean seeds, mix them into the dry ingredients.
3. Colour (Optional): If you want your custard powder to have a yellow hue, add a few drops of yellow food colouring. Mix thoroughly until the color is evenly distributed.
4. Store: Transfer the mixture to an airtight container. Store in a cool, dry place. This homemade custard powder can last for several months.
Usage:
To use your homemade custard powder, substitute it in recipes that call for store-bought custard powder. Typically, for each cup of liquid (milk or water), you would use about 2 tablespoons of your homemade custard powder.
Note:
This homemade version may not thicken exactly like commercial custard powders due to the absence of stabilizers, but it will provide a delicious flavor and can be used in various recipes!
